We know that coal is the most abundant fossil fuel on Earth. But the fact that Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe is mesmerizing and is the focus for many as the potential future of renewable energy.
Twinkle twinkle little star
Wonder how stars glow for billions of years? Simple math. One gram of hydrogen fuel yields the same amount of energy as ten million grams of coal when subjected to the pressures inside stars. The average-sized star contains an unimaginable quantity of it: 75% of its mass is comprised of hydrogen atoms, which is plenty to last through the ages. Every light you see up in the night sky is powered by hydrogen that produces energy that lasts billions of years and supplies the hydrogen that makes the water you drink.
Turn your sight downwards and the story is quite different. Despite being surrounded by the universe’s most abundant element here on Earth—hydrogen in the form of water—most of our night lights are still powered by burning coal or fossil fuels. You know the cost we pay to burn our way to progress. If we keep doing it, a sad mantle of gray fog will block more and more stars every year, constantly reminding us of our lack of ingenuity.
We don’t have to block the stars
Imagine: just a fraction of the 1-to-10 million hydrogen-to-coal energy ratio I mentioned before could power our society for thousands of years without the need to burn anything. In stars, hydrogen releases its energy at its most extreme. Yet, the hydrogen in your glass of water is the same element as the one burning in stars. It actually came from there and can be extracted through less violent means to achieve the same incredible energy potential of the hydrogen atom.
It’s energy you can swallow (literally), and it is called Hydrogen 2.0
Hydrogen 2.0 harnesses powerful forces observed in nature, combined in a new way, to liberate hydrogen from its oxygen bond in water far more efficiently and sustainably than ever before, unlocking a nearly inexhaustible source of energy for our society.
Rather than looking up to the stars for inspiration on how to harness hydrogen, Joi Scientific looked toward the sea. There, in the vast ocean, lies the answer to our energy conundrum. First, it surrounds every continent, so most people have access to it. No need to dig. Every molecule of seawater has one atom of hydrogen ready to be extracted. Nature already does this on its own: in certain conditions, the tides and the atmosphere work together to liberate hydrogen from the oceans. It happens every day, and this is what got us inspired.
Hydrogen 2.0 harnesses the very building blocks of life itself, hydrogen and oxygen, and transforms them at the molecular level to liberate hydrogen. Once extracted, hydrogen can work its energy wonder. The result of this process is the transformational, localized production of hydrogen energy at the point-of-use―safely, affordably and with no carbon emissions. It is based on efficient extraction technology that produces hydrogen gas from water on-demand, where and when it is needed.
How good does it get?
For starters, turning water—any water, clean or dirty, in a lake or the ocean—into a source of energy creates the world’s most abundant source of power. No other substance on Earth is more abundant. As we have discovered in the past decade, there are comets and moons in our vicinity that have more water than our entire planet. Abundance is the key word in the new Hydrogen 2.0 era we just entered.
Abundance alone is no guarantee
Hydrogen 2.0 makes the abundant available by enabling uninterrupted availability of fuel that can be reliably produced any time, day or night (unlike solar), in any weather condition (unlike the wind), anywhere (unlike hydrocarbons). And guess what? Because Hydrogen 2.0 fuel can be safely stored, without pressure, at a wide range of temperatures (0°C to 90°C) and uses the world’s existing liquid fuel distribution channels, we do not have to wait decades and spend billions just to bring it to market.
Regarding the emissions from a Hydrogen 2.0 system, I have two words for you: drinking water.
You can swallow that
And so, we launched Joi Scientific last week to expedite the world’s transition to clean, abundant and affordable hydrogen energy. Our technology represents the first ‘no-compromise’ energy solution, economically and environmentally, to power all kinds of applications to fuel growth and innovation everywhere―in both developed and developing countries.
